The fulfillment of the 70th week of Daniel 9 is fairly straight-forward

Understanding the seven years of the 70th week of Daniel is very important, because of the truth of its fulfillment and the deceptions based on it.

The 70th week of Daniel 9 is the only prophecy that foretold when Messiah would start His ministry and die for our sins.  The context of Daniel 9 is that the Jews are at the end of their 70-year captivity, and Daniel is inquiring about what will happen to them.  Daniel is not seeking information about the end times or the antichrist, just about the destiny of the Jewish nation.  Daniel 9:24-27 gives the answer.

Seventy Shemitah cycles are determined for the Jewish people. The prophecy is pointing to seventy 7-year Shemitah cycles, which is ten 49-year Jubilee cycles. The first seven weeks of the prophecy point to seven 7-year Shemitah cycles, which is one Jubilee cycle of 49 years.

The commands from Cyrus and Darius were about the rebuilding the temple, not the city.

The timeline started with a command from Persian King Artaxerxes in 457 BC, so the 70th week occurred from 27-34 AD, which is the time frame in which we know Messiah carried out His ministry and died for our sins. This is confirmed by the book of 1 Esdras, which is an extension of the book of Ezra. And it’s validated, as a year of Jubilee took place in 457 BC, when the captive Jews were set free, confirming the starting year.

The command from King Artaxerxes in 445/444 BC was to restart the rebuilding of Jerusalem, as it had been stopped, which is why Nehemiah was so sad; so it’s not the correct decree.

Daniel 9:24 defines six things to be fulfilled during the 490 years.  The Jews cannot fulfill them.  Our Messiah did with His blood atonement that paid for transgressions and reconciled the Jews, and us, with the Father. Isaiah 53 foretold Messiah being wounded for our transgressions, our iniquities, when He was ‘cut off.

In Daniel 9:25-27, you see how the 70-weeks are structured. It started with 7-weeks (one Jubilee cycle) during which the Jews were empowered to rebuild Jerusalem. Then 62 weeks of mostly silence from the prophets. And then the pinnacle of the prophecy, the last 7-years of the 70th week. Daniel 9:25 points to Messiah the Prince appearing after 69 weeks. 9:26 points to Him dying after the 69 weeks, meaning in the 70th week. His multi-year ministry took place in the 70th week, starting with His Isaiah declaration and anointing at His baptism.

The ‘people of the prince’ are the Jews, who are declared in Daniel 9:24 as ‘thy people.Messiah the Prince is of the tribe of Judah, so the Jews are ‘the people of the prince.’

The Jews caused Jerusalem and the temple to be destroyed because they continued in their rebellion against the Heavenly Father and they rejected His Son and delivered Him up to be killed, so it was their punishment.

The Jews caused Jerusalem and the temple to be destroyed because they attacked the army of Cestius, killing thousands of soldiers, which incited the ire of the Roman Emperor who sent three legions of soldiers to Jerusalem to capture the Jews.

The Jews caused Jerusalem and the temple to be destroyed because they caused the peaceable Titus, who tried to get them to surrender, to order the desolation after being horrified by the Jews causing hundreds of thousands of their own people to die.

Daniel 9:25-26 points to Messiah the Prince, so the ‘he’ in Daniel 9:27 is still Messiah, who came to ratify the everlasting covenant in the middle of the 70th week.  The word ‘prince’ is the same Hebrew word, nagiyd. It makes no sense for the word prince to point to two different people. Many Jews believed in Messiah the Prince, 3,000 on Pentecost and more were added daily. Messiah’s Ekklesia was built on a foundation of Jews.

The 70th week of Daniel points to Messiah’s multiyear ministry, not just His death.

People who believe that the 70th week of Daniel 9 is yet to be fulfilled, proclaim that four days after the 69th week was fulfilled, Messiah entered Jerusalem to be ‘cut off,’ killed, fulfilling Daniel 9:26.

But the prophecy is not just pointing to Messiah coming to die, but to His multiyear ministry in which He said, ‘repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’

It started when He was baptized by John, when the Spirit descended on Him, and the Father proclaimed ‘This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.’

Then He went into the synagogue, read the Isaiah passage and proclaimed that it was fulfilled in Him. His many miracles served to validate His authority.

On Passover, at the beginning of His ministry, He cleansed the temple, driving out the money-changers. Three years later He repeated this temple cleansing before He died as the Spotless Lamb on Passover.

Messiah confirmed the everlasting covenant of Daniel 9:4. Daniel 9:27 says that he ‘confirms’ the covenant, which means that the covenant already existed. We only have to look back to Daniel 9:4 to see that Daniel is pleading with the Heavenly Father to remember His covenant of mercy to those who love Him.

“And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments.”

Messiah came to confirm the everlasting covenant that was made to Father Abraham, which needed to be ratified by the blood of Messiah, the Spotless Lamb.

Romans 15:8 says, “Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers.“

Galatians 3:17 says, “And this I say, that the law, which was four hundred and thirty years later, cannot annul the covenant that was confirmed before by God in Christ, that it should make the promise of no effect.”

Hebrews 13:20 says, “Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant.

Daniel 9:27 points to the timing of Messiah’s death, in the middle of the 7-years.  The word ‘for’ in Daniel 9:27 is added by the translators, making it seem to point to a 7-year covenant. It’s simply pointing to the last week of seven years.

Messiah’s death on the cross caused the need for temple animal sacrifices to cease, as He is the one-time atonement for sin. The Father validated this when He tore the temple curtain in two, though the rebellious Jewish leaders continued sacrifices until their judgment in 70 AD.

The deception is that the 70th week of Daniel hasn’t been fulfilled yet.

We’ve been told that it is about an end-times antichrist who makes a 7-year peace agreement with Israel, which starts a 7-year tribulation period.

The Jesuits created this deception in the 16th century to deflect blame away from the Popes of Rome, as the Protestant Reformers had rightly identified them as the Little Horn of Daniel, Son of Perdition of 2 Thessalonians 2, and antichrist beast of Revelation 13.

They had Jesuit Priest Francisco Ribera, a brilliant man with a doctorate in theology, write a 500 page commentary with an opposing view, where he manipulated prophecies in the books of Daniel and Revelation, to create the narrative of a one-man antichrist in an end-time 7-year tribulation. This idea, called Futurism, was quickly adopted as the Roman Catholic Church’s official position on the Antichrist.

The true Church effectively rejected these futuristic concepts until the 19th century, when the Jesuits caused several people to promote these concepts; including Pastor Edward Irving, John Nelson Darby and Cyrus Ingerson Scofield, which led to these deceptions being taught at Dallas Theological Seminary, where the leaven of the Jesuits deceptions have spread around the world.

The historical witness of the many persecuted believers and theologians of the past have been pushed aside, and futurism is now taught by most Pastors.

The 70th Week Of Daniel 9 Decoded

I understand that this explanation of the 70th week of Daniel may be new to you, so I want to step back and take a child-like, logical view of the prophecy.

Simply ask yourself:

How long does it take the Father to fulfill His own 70 week prophecy? The obvious and correct answer is 70 weeks.  If a 70 week prophecy is given and it is not fulfilled in 70 consecutive weeks, then the prophecy is not valid.

What week follows the 69th week? The obvious answer is the 70th week, but the enemy would have you believe that there is a 1,990+ year time gap between the 69th and 70th week, even though there is no such time gap defined in Daniel 9.

Daniel 9:25 mentions the arrival of the promised Messiah, and then Daniel 9:27 mentions a ‘covenant‘. Whose covenant do you suppose that it is referring to? Isn’t it logical to assume that it is Messiah’s covenant, as the reason that He came was to die to ratify the everlasting covenant with His blood as the Passover Lamb?

The text even proclaims that He was ‘cut off‘, meaning that He was killed, in the middle of the seven years, which matches Isaiah’s prophecy about the promised Messiah, in Isaiah 53:8, “He was taken from prison and from judgment. And as for His generation, who considered that He shall be cut off from the land of the living? For the transgression of My people He was stricken.

The consequences of the 70 Weeks of Daniel deception are grand!

The enemy’s end times deception is based on the concept of a futuristic 70th week of Daniel. It causes people to look for an end times one-man Antichrist, instead of identifying the office of the papacy as the beast of Revelation, the Little Horn of Daniel and the Son of Perdition.

This is the very reason that the end times 7 year tribulation deception was created by the Roman Catholic Church. They were being accused by the Protestant Reformers of being the Antichrist system who persecuted the saints. The Protestant Reformers told people to ‘come out of her‘, which caused millions of people to leave the Roman Catholic Church and be saved by the pure Gospel of Messiah.

The enemy has programmed our minds to view the 70th week of Daniel as futuristic. But when you understand that the 70th week of Daniel has been fulfilled, and that it’s not an end-times 7-year tribulation period; most of the enemy’s deceptions about prophecy fulfillment crumble to the ground.

The Revelation Timeline Decoded Bible study series gives you the proof that the Popes of Rome are the beast of Revelation, the Little Horn of Daniel and the Son of Perdition.

  1. Greetings! Prophecy cannot be interpreted literally so why try to make 70 weeks literal?
In scriptural numerics the number 70 represents the punishment and restoration of Israel. We are all Israel today and those that are redeemable will be restored to the planet after the Millennial Reign as new Jerusalem. Be sure to read the God-breathed Book, The Journey Through Tribulation by Mikah, available at Amazon, to get the complete and true interpretation of Daniel and Revelation.

    • Mikah, my explanation is the fulfillment of the 70 weeks of Daniel in 490 years, not 70; so I have not given a literal explanation.

If the 70 weeks of Daniel prophecy is not pointing to 70 prophetic weeks, then how were the Jews supposed to know when their promised Messiah would appear?

Why would the angel give Daniel a specific number, if it’s not going to be fulfilled in a specific time frame?

The prophecies in Revelation point to literal events, but it uses symbols (which are defined in the Old Testament) to give the explanation; as it’s a coded war manual. http://revelationtimelinedecoded.com

  2. If Daniels 70 weeks has already occurred David, then correct me if I’m wrong, but the last week of years would have begun in the year 29AD at the beginning of Christ’s ministry. Then by 33AD He was ‘cut off’ and then by 36AD the 70th week was complete and the prophecy would be sealed up. This is based on 483 years (69 weeks) after 455BC which is the generally accepted date of the going forth of the commandment.
The temple wasn’t destroyed until 70AD so in this model there is a 34 year discrepancy in the prophecy. How do you get around that?

    Reply
    • Actually I am slightly incorrect in the previous comment.

455BC is correct for the date of the going forth of the word as this happened in the 20th year of the reign of King Artexexes. Nehemiah 2. The temple would then have been built 7 weeks (or 49 years) later placing the building of the temple at 406BC.

Daniel 9 goes on to say that after a further 62 weeks (434 years) the Messiah would be ‘cut off’. I was incorrect in stating he just began his ministry on this date because that’s not what Daniel 9 says.

If the date of 455BC is correct, Christ was crucified in 28AD. And from this date on was the beginning of the 70th week according to your view, or the last 7 years before the destruction of Israel.. This would put the fulfilment of the prophecy at 35AD. The temple was destroyed in 70AD so this interpretation is incorrect wouldn’t you agree?

      Reply
    • The final decree to empower the Jews to complete the rebuilding of the temple and city, and to start temple sacrifices, was in 457 A.D.; so that puts the 70th week at 27-34 A.D. Messiah was born in 3 B.C., so He would have been age 30 in 27 A.D.

The things to be completed in the 70 weeks are defined in Daniel 9:24; some of which were fulfilled by the Jews, but most of them by Messiah. http://70thweekofdaniel.com/messiah-fulfilled-the-purposes-of-daniel-924-during-the-70th-week-of-daniel/

The prophecy of the temple and city being desolated is not defined as having to occur in the 70 week; but is the result of the Jewish leaders delivering Messiah up to be killed, during the 70th week of Daniel.

      Reply
      • If you’re understanding of the date for the beginning of the 70 weeks is correct then 490 years from 457BC would put us in 33AD. With the last 7 starting in 26AD. -457+490 = 33AD. 33-7 = 26. OK.

V.26 says that the Messiah will be ‘cut off’ after 69 weeks. 7 weeks from the going out of the decree to the construction of the temple and then a further 62 weeks until the Messiah is ‘cut off’. So, 69 x 7 weeks = 483 years. -457BC+483 =26AD. This is the date He was cut off. The Hebrew word for cut off is ‘Kareth’ meaning extinction of life. So this must refer to the year He was crucified.

At the end of the 70th week the transgression will be finished, there will be no more sin, there will be reconciliation for iniquity, there will be everlasting righteousness, the vision and prophecy will be sealed up and the most Holy will be anointed.

v.27 tells us what’s going to happen in the 70th week.
And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

If you believe 70 weeks is historic then why did the sacrifices continue until the temple was destroyed in 70AD? This is well outside the prophetic timeline. According to v.27 the sacrifices would have to cease during that last 7 years leading up to 33AD. But they didn’t.

        The bible is quite clear that we don’t live in a time of prophecy now. Instead we live in a time that Paul describes as ‘mystery’. This time period that we live in now was not prophesied in the OT. It was hidden. The Father didn’t make a mistake He just kept it quiet until the time was right. Paul says in Colossians 1: 25 Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;
26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:
27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

        • Tim, there is no year ‘0’, so 490 years from 457 B.C. is 34 A.D.

The text clearly says that He was ‘cut off’ in the middle of the 70th week.

His sacrifice as the Passover Lamb ended the NEED for temple sacrifices, as no other sacrifice is needed, since He was the one-time atonement for our sins.

          Reply
          • David, you say the text clearly says that He was ‘cut off’ in the middle of the 70th week?

            V. 25 = 7 weeks
            +
            V. 26 = 62 weeks = 69 weeks. Then shall Messiah be cut off. How is this in the middle of the 70th week?

          • Daniel 9:27 tells us that Messiah caused the need for sacrifices to cease in the middle of the week, “And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease,”

That happened when He was ‘cut off’, killed, as the Passover Lamb, which ended the need for temple sacrifices. The Father caused the temple curtain to be torn in two, confirming that the need for sacrifices ended with His Son’s death.

  3. Yes. It does say that Messiah will put an end to the sacrifices and offerings in the middle of the 70th week David, the prophecy is 100% accurate but the problem with what you are saying is that He was ‘cut off’ at the end of the 69th week. 3.5 years earlier than what you are thinking.

Yes, at Christ’s death and resurrection at the end of the 69th week the need for sacrifice was not necessary, and yes, the curtain was torn in 2 in the temple to back this up, the scripture says that and I agree with it. But timing is important here. Romans tells us that Israel was blinded for our sake for a time. That they will be dealt with in the future. The 70th week can’t have come into play yet. It’s not possible.

When it does it lasts 7 years, Messiah will once and for all put an end to the sacrificial system as described in v.27 in the middle of the week or after 3.5 years. Oh. How can the sacrificial system be reinstated in the future though? Not through God, through Antichrist. 2 Thes 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Notice here how the Lord will consume the wicked with the Spirit of His mouth and with the brightness of His coming? This is future as Christ has quite obviously not come to destroy the wicked yet.

    • You said that the ‘he’ in Daniel 9:27 is Messiah, but then somehow apply the 70th week to an end times antichrist. That makes no sense.

This website explains how Messiah appeared AFTER the 69th week. He was anointed at His baptism to start His ministry. He ministered for several years, as witnessed by the Passovers mentioned in the book of John.

So we can clearly see that His ministry took place in the 70th week, so it is not future.

He was killed halfway through the seven years, at the 3 1/2 year point. His disciples only preached to the Jews for the next 3 1/2 years, during the rest of the 7th week of Daniel. And then after Stephen was stoned to death, marking the Jewish leader final rejection of Messiah, the narrative of Acts changes dramatically, and the Gospel is also preached to the gentile nations.

So we can clearly see that the Jews were given seven years, during the 70th week, to accept the promised Messiah.

Everything that was defined in Daniel 9:24 to take place in the 70 weeks, was fulfilled.

And the result of the Jewish leaders rejecting their promised Messiah and delivering Him up to be killed, was carried out in that generation of Jews; just like Messiah proclaimed in His Olivet Discourse. http://theolivetdiscourse.com

We are not waiting on a one-man antichrist to appear in the end-times, as the office of the papacy, the Popes of Rome have fulfilled that role since the 6th century. They have proclaimed to be God, to be Jesus Christ in the flesh, to forgive sins and to provide salvation; thus they have taken the place of Christ, and are anti-Christ. http://revelationtimelinedecoded.com/the-antichrist-sea-beast-of-revelation-13-is-the-popes-of-the-roman-catholic-church/

      • Well I am 100% incorrect in suggesting messiah in v.27 is the true Messiah.. Hence the confusion… It does not make sense and I apologise for my error.. Not quite sure how I mixed it up but again I am sorry. Let’s get it right this time.

Please let us look at v.26 & 27 to check it again.

26 “And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off,”

V.26 must be referring to the true Messiah. Christ’s death, resurrection and ascension is the Messiah being ‘cut off’ as it is exactly 483 years from the going forth of the commandment..

“but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.”

As Messiah was ‘cut off’ in the first part of v.26, the verse now changes it’s focus to the ‘prince to come’ who clearly is not the Messiah as the true Messiah was ‘cut off’ at the beginning of the verse. The ‘prince that shall come’ is antichrist and the people with him is everyone who rejects Christ’s offer of salvation.

27 “And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week:”

This is most definitely antichrist confirming a 7 year covenant with Israel.

“and in the midst of the week he shall cause”

The antichrist again here.. 3 and 1/2 years into the last 7 years, duping Israel into believing he is the true Messiah.

“the sacrifice and the oblation to cease,”

But wait… 1/2 way through the week he stops the sacrifices!! Exactly! Israel now realise the true Messiah was the one whom they crucified and rejected 2000 years ago! What have they done! They now realise that this messiah whom they thought was the Messiah is in fact the ‘son of perdition’.

“and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.”

and the world will move into it’s final 3.5 years of great tribulation with Israel taking the gospel to the ends of the earth and then the end will come, and so all Israel will be saved.

Romans 11 says that Israel is currently blinded so this is no surprise that they will be duped into accepting an antichrist, but it also says that they will be saved. Interestingly, there are plans in place for the construction of a third temple, the heifers necessary for sacrifice are ready to go in Israel as we speak.

I’m learning a lot through our conversations. Thank you!

        • All you’ve done is tell me how I’m wrong, so I’m not sure what you are learning. You still assign the 70th week of Daniel to the future. You assign Scripture that is about the Messiah, to an end times antichrist.

          Reply
          • David, I haven’t done anything other than read what the scripture actually says. No website or book or anything else can refute it. So if we read the scripture and The scripture shows my belief or my understanding is wrong then its wrong. You, perhaps unknowingly pointed out an error in my understanding and I’m thankful for that because the truth is even clearer now. I understand Daniels prophecy more clearly than I ever have before.

There’s no use worrying about whether I’m wrong or whether you’re wrong. Who really cares? As long as we are open and willing to accept truth no matter how unusual it may seem.

  4. Having read through the comments, I honestly struggle to see how the 70 weeks prophecy can be understood as anything other than what it plainly describes: a contiguous period of 490 years commencing from the decree to rebuild Jerusalem. During that time, the Jews were to prepare for and receive Messiah. The idea of the final week being different and somehow drawn out across centuries is just not supported by the text.

Following the 70 weeks (circa AD34) and after an unspecified time period, the one who desolates the temple (which Christians understand as the Body of Christ, the Church) arrives.

Why is there a desire to read it any other way than what it plainly says?

  5. Hi David,

I am sure you know that Trump is moving the Israel capital from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. I think that many of the signs are pointing towards the fact that Daniels 70th week (1 week peace treaty might actually be fulfilled very soon). It seems like everything is lining up for a potential war then peace, or the fact that a 2-state solution will be put into place where they can worship in peace, and thus starting Daniels 70th week.

    • Hi Matt,

Yeah, I saw the announcement. It’s causing quite the stir.

The enemy is going to play out their false script. This move will lead to a lot of violence from the Palestinians, which will lead to a peace agreement with a two-state solution.

But all of that is just a deception to fool the world and to fool Christians.

In this study series I’ve proven that the 70th week of Daniel was fulfilled on time, after the 69th week.

And in my Revelation Timeline Decoded study series I’ve proven how most of Revelation has already been fulfilled. We are in the midst of the 6th bowl, waiting on WW III between Muslim countries (the kings of the East) and Israel; and Trump’s declaration just moved us closer to that. http://revelationtimelinedecoded.com/revelation-fulfillment-timeline-summary/

My thought is that I hope that you will read that summary study to see the truth, so that you can see that people like Irwin Baxter are misleading you.

  6. Hi David,
I am new to your web site. What I have read so far I am in agreement with except for one thing. In the box, outlined in red, you have the “healing of the deadly wound” occurring in 538 AD. This was the beginning of the empowerment of the papacy. The deadly wound came in 1798 when the pope was dethroned and taken captive. Since 1798, we have been witnessing the “healing of the deadly wound.” I am thinking your placing the “healing” with the date 538 was something like a “typo error” based on the accuracy of what I have been reading on your site.

    Reply
    • It’s not a typo Glenn. The head was the Roman Emperor, who was removed from power in 476 A.D. Then the Popes rose to power and were given civil and ecclesiastic authority over Rome. They took the title of the Emperors, Pontifex Maximus, the leader of church and state, and the deadly head wound was healed.

Note that the declaration that the deadly head wound was healed was proclaimed early in the description of the sea beast of Revelation 13, not late; which indicates that it happened at the beginning of their 1,260 year reign, not at the end.

Daniel pointed to the same event, when He described the Little Horn on Daniel 7, the Popes of Rome; rising to power out of the 10 civil kingdoms of the fallen Roman Empire.

The Apostle Paul pointed to the same event, that the Roman Emperors were ‘restraining’ the Popes, the Son of Perdition, from taking power.

Revelation 17 describes the 8th king, the Popes of Rome, rising to power out of the Roman Empire.

The significance of the Popes taking power after the Western Roman Emperors were removed from power, was foretold by Daniel, Paul and John. Here’s a study that provides more information. http://revelationtimelinedecoded.com/prophecy-points-to-the-leader-of-the-roman-beast/

Here’s a video on which I explain the transition of power from the Emperors to the Popes. https://youtu.be/Etl1IQ7Kdys

What we have witnessed since 1798 is the creation of the ‘image of the beast’ by the false prophet Jesuit General.

The beast is the church/state of Rome, which was controlled by the Popes for 1,260 years, from 538-1798 A.D. In 1929, the Jesuits caused the Vatican to become a state again; so that the Pope is the leader of the church and state of Rome.

But it is just an image, because the truth is that the false prophet Jesuit General controls the Vatican and the Pope. The Black Pope exercises his authority in front of the White Pope. http://revelationtimelinedecoded.com/the-earth-beast-of-revelation-13-jesuit-generals-of-rome/

I hope that helps. Keep learning and growing in The Way!
